Unlocking the Future: Insights from 7,000 Teens on Technology's Role in Their Lives

What 7,000 Teens in Europe Told Us About the Future of Technology

In an age where digital technology is intertwined with daily life, the voices of young people are critical in shaping what comes next. A recent study conducted by Google in collaboration with youth consultancy Livity offers an illuminating glimpse into how over 7,000 teenagers across Europe view the future of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), and its role in their lives.

Understanding the Digital Generation

The survey, known as “The Future Report,” gathered insights from teens aged 13 to 18 in seven European countries: Ireland, Poland, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, and Sweden. This generation has grown up fully immersed in a connected world and has never known life without Wi-Fi. Their relationship with technology is not passive; instead, they actively engage with and influence its development to enhance learning, creativity, and wellbeing.

AI Adoption and Its Impact on Creativity and Learning

One of the most striking findings is the widespread and enthusiastic use of AI tools among teens. Approximately 40% of those surveyed reported using AI daily or almost daily. The main reasons for embracing AI include boosting creativity, with 81% stating it improves their creative abilities, and problem-solving, as 65% found AI helpful in generating new ideas or solutions. Additionally, nearly half (47%) appreciated AI’s ability to explain complex topics in diverse ways, making learning more accessible.

However, the report also highlights a disconnect in formal education settings. Nearly 28% of teens said their schools have not officially approved the use of any AI tools, signaling that educational institutions may be lagging behind students in adopting technology. Ali, an 18-year-old from Sweden, noted, “I think school is lagging behind. I think we should learn how to use AI in a better way than what we do now.”

Critical Thinking in an AI-Driven World

Despite the enthusiasm for AI, teens are cautious users. They are acutely aware of the importance of assessing the trustworthiness of information. Over half (55%) said they actively consider whether digital content is reliable, and nearly half (46%) check details against other sources. Jack, 17, from Ireland, summarized the balanced approach succinctly: "AI shouldn’t do the thinking for you."

This demonstrates a generation intent on preserving their critical thinking skills while leveraging the benefits of new technologies.

Parental Guidance and the Evolution of Digital Habits

The survey revealed that parents and guardians remain the most trusted advisors on healthy online habits for nearly one-third (32%) of teenagers. Friends and teachers also play roles but to a lesser extent. There is, however, a notable shift as teens grow older. Among younger teens (13-15 years), over half (54%) rely on their parents for guidance. This trust significantly drops to less than 20% in the 16-18 age group, indicating that early adolescence is a critical period for establishing healthy digital habits.

Tools like supervised experiences on YouTube are helping parents support their children’s balanced relationship with technology during these formative years.

Technology as a Gateway to New Worlds

Beyond education, technology opens doors to broader cultural experiences. YouTube, in particular, is a popular platform for learning—74% of teens reported watching videos to acquire new knowledge for school. It also serves as a medium for cultural discovery; as Szymon, 17, from Poland, shared, “I often discover new cultural figures through YouTube videos.”

Looking Ahead: Inclusion, Guidance, and Balance

European teens are optimistic about the possibilities AI and digital tools offer. But their vision extends beyond mere access: they seek inclusion, thoughtful guidance, and a balanced digital lifestyle. The study underscores a societal imperative—and a challenge for the tech community—to ensure that technology evolves in a way that nurtures these values.

As this generation moves forward, their digital habits and attitudes will be a driving force behind European technological innovation over the coming decade and beyond.
