Transforming Indonesia's Defense: The Imperative for High-Tech Solutions in a 7.2 Million Square Kilometer Nation

Indonesia’s Vast National Territory Demands Advanced High-Tech Defense Systems

Bogor, December 12, 2025 — The Defense University of the Republic of Indonesia (Unhan RI) has stressed the urgent need for Indonesia to modernize its national defense communication and response strategies by integrating advanced technology. Speaking at a recent event, Deputy Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni of Unhan RI, Major General Dr. Totok Imam Santoso, underlined that Indonesia’s vast national territory of 7.2 million square kilometers makes reliance on conventional defense methods insufficient.

During the hybrid-format event titled "Ngobrol Together Legislator", held on December 11 with participation from Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Major General Totok articulated the importance of fast, accurate technology that must be accessible across all levels of Indonesian society to meet defense needs.

“With a national area of 7.2 million square kilometers, the pattern of communication and response for national defense can no longer rely on conventional methods, but must be supported by fast, accurate technology and must reach all levels of society,” he said.

The event featured prominent attendees including Dr. Dave Akbarshah Fikarno Laksono, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the DPR RI, and Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Trade, who joined online. In-person attendees included students from Unhan RI’s Bachelor Program Cadet (S1) and Master’s Program (S2).

Maj. Gen. Totok further emphasized that evolving global dynamics and the complexity of modern threats require Indonesia to adapt digital technology as a strategic imperative. He particularly highlighted that digital literacy transcends mere technical device usage.

“Digital literacy is not limited to the ability to use devices, but also encompasses becoming intelligent users, innovators, educators, and integral parts of the national digital ecosystem,” he remarked.

This outlook aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategic goals to strengthen national security by integrating cutting-edge technological systems that enhance communication, surveillance, and defense capabilities throughout the archipelago.
