Ex-Federal Judge Found Dead in Mexico, Suspected Suicide
Zinacantepec, Mexico – June 16, 2025
Local police in the State of Mexico found the body of Everardo Mara Arias, a retired federal judge. He handled well-known cases. One case involved Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of a famous drug lord. They found his body in a white car on a dirt road near the cemetery in Santa Cruz Cuauhtenco.
The body showed a gunshot to the head. The car sat close to where neighbors live. Local and state police rushed to the scene.
The State Prosecutor’s Office began a careful review. The main idea now sees his death as a suicide. The review will check all the steps.
Mara Arias left the bench in December 2024 when changes came to the courts. Last year, he made news for his legal decision that stopped an arrest paper against Ovidio Guzmán. He also worked on a case that gave legal help to José Luis Abarca, a former mayor linked to a famous case.
The Federal Judiciary Council shared their sadness. They sent kind words to his family and his colleagues.
Many await more news as the review goes on. Officials now check if his death may change other legal work in Mexico.
