SCO Strengthens Agricultural Cooperation Through Technology Exchanges at Tianjin Summit
TIANJIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is deepening its agricultural collaboration by promoting technology exchanges and training, officials announced during a press briefing held on the sidelines of the 2025 SCO Summit in Tianjin, China.
Wu Wengang, vice governor of Shaanxi Province, highlighted the role of the SCO’s agricultural technology demonstration base located in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Established in 2019 within the Yangling Agricultural Hi-tech Industrial Demonstration Zone, the base has become a pivotal platform for enhancing regional agricultural cooperation among SCO member states.
Demonstration Parks and Technology Trials
The base has successfully expanded its outreach by setting up 11 agricultural technology demonstration parks across other SCO countries. These parks serve as trial grounds for testing various crop varieties and implementing cutting-edge farming technologies. The initiative aims to foster shared innovation and elevate agricultural productivity throughout the member states.
Joint Laboratories Advancing Agricultural Science
In collaboration with partners from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the demonstration base has established four specialized laboratories. These facilities focus on critical areas such as dryland farming techniques, green crop production, smart agriculture, and digital agriculture solutions. The joint research efforts are intended to address challenges unique to the region’s diverse agricultural environments and to develop sustainable, technology-driven farming practices.
Future Cooperation Priorities
Vice Governor Wu emphasized that the SCO will intensify practical cooperation, particularly in the development of seeds suited for dryland farming and in advancing water-saving irrigation methods. These focus areas align with the broader goal of improving food security and promoting resource-efficient agriculture within SCO member countries.
Context of the Summit
The 2025 SCO annual summit, the largest in the organization’s history, is being held from August 31 to September 1 in Tianjin, underscoring the growing importance of regional collaboration on issues including agriculture, trade, and technology exchange.
As agriculture remains a cornerstone of the SCO’s regional economic cooperation, the enhanced focus on technological exchanges reflects a commitment to harness innovation for sustainable development and shared prosperity across member countries.
