Revolutionizing Travel: AI-Driven Parking Tech Enhances Efficiency at Charleston International Airport

Charleston International Airport Introduces AI-Powered Parking Technology for a Smoother Experience

North Charleston, S.C. — Parking at Charleston International Airport has become quicker and more seamless thanks to the introduction of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology combined with ongoing expansion efforts designed to meet rising traveler demand.

The airport recently implemented an AI-based system that automatically scans vehicle license plates upon entry to its parking areas. This technology links each vehicle to a digital parking session, eliminating the traditional need for a physical parking ticket. While a printed ticket is still provided as a backup option, it is no longer necessary to present one when exiting the lots.

Once a driver is ready to leave, parking fees are automatically calculated. Payments can be made effortlessly via tap-to-pay credit cards or a dedicated mobile app. This upgraded process aims to reduce congestion and enable drivers to exit the parking facilities swiftly, with the airport estimating the entire checkout to take only about 10 seconds.

“After a long day of travel, nothing is more frustrating than searching for a parking ticket just to pay and leave,” said Robert Hollis, Manager of Landside Operations at Charleston International Airport. “This new approach makes everything much easier—less fumbling, fewer things to manage. You can simply drive in and out.”

This parking technology upgrade is a key component of the airport’s broader modernization plan. One significant project underway is the construction of a $348 million multi-level parking garage, which is slated for completion in 2027. The airport also broke ground earlier this year on a $100 million West Gates expansion to increase passenger handling capacity and support economic growth in the region.

The AI parking system is being rolled out in phases and represents a $1.8 million investment. Hollis also highlighted future possibilities for the system, including eliminating the need to scan a credit card during payment. “We have plans to allow customers to store a credit card on file for automatic payment,” he explained. “This would enable drivers to exit without stopping at a kiosk at all.”

In addition to parking innovations, Charleston International launched a redesigned website earlier this year that provides real-time updates on parking availability. This feature aims to assist travelers in selecting parking options and planning trips more effectively, especially during peak periods.

These improvements coincide with a period of steady growth for Charleston International, which now handles over 90 flights daily and welcomed 6.2 million passengers in the past year. The airport has also enhanced payment options, signage, and the management of parking permits for employees, vendors, and rental agencies as part of its ongoing efforts to improve visitor experience and operational efficiency.

With these advancements, Charleston International Airport continues to position itself as a modern, forward-thinking transportation hub designed to meet the evolving needs of travelers and support the Lowcountry’s economic vitality.
