Pope Leo XIV Advises Students: ‘Do Not Let Technology Use You’
Rome, October 30, 2025 — In a compelling address to students gathered at the Paul VI Audience Hall in Rome, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of using education as a means to build a better society while cautioning against becoming overly dependent on technology. The Vatican News reported on Thursday that the pontiff urged the youth to maintain control over technology rather than allowing it to control their lives.
Drawing inspiration from the recently canonized Italian student Pier Giorgio Frassati, Pope Leo XIV highlighted two of Frassati’s guiding mottos: “To live without faith … is not living but simply getting along” and “To the heights.” The Pope urged students to fully embrace life and aim for higher, meaningful goals instead of being distracted by fleeting pleasures or superficial appearances.
Addressing the growing influence of digital tools and artificial intelligence, the Pope stressed the need for a cautious and humane approach to technology. While acknowledging the “intelligent” capabilities of artificial intelligence, he underscored that technology should be employed as an instrument for kindness and creativity rather than as a means of isolation or addiction.
"We must learn to humanize the digital, building it as a space of fraternity and creativity — not a case where you lock yourselves in, not an addiction or an escape,” Pope Leo XIV said, reminding young people to engage with technology in ways that enhance human connection and social solidarity.
The Pope’s message serves as a timely reminder of the ethical considerations surrounding technological advancement and the critical role education plays in fostering responsible digital citizenship.
