Andhika Satria Pratama: From UGM Alumnus to Ph.D. Candidate at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
Yogyakarta, November 6, 2025 – Pursuing advanced education abroad, especially at the doctoral level, is a challenging journey that requires curiosity, perseverance, and dedication. Andhika Satria Pratama, an alumnus of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), embodies these qualities as he currently undertakes his doctoral studies at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, specializing in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.
A Passion for Fluid Mechanics Originating at UGM
Andhika graduated from the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics, Faculty of Engineering, UGM, with a bachelor’s degree in 2020. His deep interest in mechanical fluid dynamics began during his undergraduate studies, where he engaged with courses related to fluid mechanics. He shared during a recent Alumni Sharing Session held in a hybrid format via Zoom and in person at UGM’s lecture hall that “Mechanical fluid dynamics is known for its mathematical complexity, which makes it fascinating and challenging.” This early passion has fueled his ongoing academic pursuits.
Fast-Tracking to Advanced Degrees and International Study
Following his bachelor’s degree, Andhika took part in UGM’s fast-track program, allowing him to complete a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in just one year, graduating in 2021 with a cumulative GPA of 3.98. In 2022, he continued his graduate studies overseas at Chalmers University of Technology, enrolling in a master’s program in Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science. His academic excellence earned him a scholarship waiving tuition fees for his doctoral program in Sweden.
Adapting to the Pace and Culture of Study in Sweden
The transition to studying in Sweden presented a swift and intensive learning pace that initially surprised Andhika. However, thanks to comprehensive guidance and effective study tips provided by Chalmers, he adapted within months. As Chalmers is part of the Nordic Five Tech alliance, Andhika also participated in a summer course at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) without additional tuition fees, though he managed his own living expenses.
Active Roles in Research and Teaching
Unlike many doctoral programs in Indonesia, Andhika’s Ph.D. journey involves active research and teaching responsibilities. He works daily as a researcher in the Fluid Dynamics division at Chalmers, contributing to academic activities and serving as a teaching assistant for several courses. He outlined that his doctoral timeline includes approximately six months allocated for teaching duties, one year for coursework, and three years dedicated to research.
Encouragement and Advice to Future Scholars
Andhika encourages students, especially those in Engineering Physics, to identify their true academic interests as this clarity makes studying more enjoyable and manageable. He advises students not to hesitate to apply for international university programs and to explore the numerous scholarship opportunities that can alleviate financial concerns. Reflecting on his alma mater, he noted, “We have a strong foundation from UGM, which is on par with many global universities. Do not fear studying abroad. Financial support through scholarships is abundant not only in Sweden but worldwide. Stay open to these opportunities.”
His story stands as an inspiring example of how dedication and strategic planning can open doors to global academic achievements.
