Marvell Technology Expands Research and Development Footprint in Vietnam with Three New Offices
US-based semiconductor leader Marvell Technology, Inc. has announced a significant expansion of its research and development (R&D) operations in Vietnam by opening three new offices—two in Ho Chi Minh City and one in Da Nang. This move reflects Marvell’s long-term commitment to advancing innovation in integrated circuit (IC) design, particularly in enhancing AI-driven data center infrastructure.
Strategic Expansion to Strengthen Semiconductor Innovation
At the official opening ceremony held on September 30, Sandeep Bharathi, President of Marvell’s Data Centre Group, underscored the importance of the new labs as a critical component of Marvell’s global research and testing capabilities. He highlighted Vietnam’s growing strategic prominence in the global semiconductor ecosystem, emphasizing the country’s vital role in the future of chip innovation.
“Through developing a highly skilled team of Vietnamese engineers, Marvell aims to deliver state-of-the-art semiconductor products that will drive the evolution of AI data infrastructure worldwide,” Bharathi stated.
Building a Skilled Vietnamese Engineering Workforce
Le Quang Dam, General Director of Marvell Vietnam, revealed that 98% of the engineering workforce at the company’s Vietnam offices are Vietnamese nationals. “Our engineers here participate in some of the most advanced and complex semiconductor projects in the world,” Dam said. “The rapid growth of our team is a testament to the exceptional talent and potential within Vietnam’s engineering community.”
Initially, Marvell Vietnam focused primarily on design verification. However, the teams have since expanded their expertise to cover the full IC design lifecycle. This encompasses architecture design, mixed-signal design, software development, and hardware verification, reflecting a maturing and increasingly sophisticated R&D operation within the country.
Talent Development and Workforce Diversification
The expansion aligns with Marvell’s broader ambitions to nurture diverse talent and deepen ties with local educational institutions and the Vietnamese government. The company plans to implement a range of initiatives including scholarships, internships, joint development of curricula, and technical workshops designed to cultivate the next generation of semiconductor engineers. A particular focus will be placed on increasing female participation in technology roles, fostering greater diversity within the engineering teams.
Vietnam’s Rising Role in the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain
Marvell’s investment marks a significant endorsement of Vietnam’s potential as a high-tech manufacturing and design hub. This comes at a time when global semiconductor companies are actively seeking to diversify their supply chains and explore emerging markets rich in engineering talent.
Since its establishment in 2013 with a modest team of five engineers operating from a small office in Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone, Marvell Vietnam has experienced rapid growth. Today, with a workforce exceeding 500 engineers, Vietnam stands as Marvell’s third-largest R&D center worldwide—an achievement realized ahead of the company’s initial three-year growth timeline.
Looking Ahead
The newly opened offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang will not only boost Marvell’s research capabilities but also contribute significantly to Vietnam’s aspirations of becoming a key player in the global semiconductor industry. By combining local talent with global innovation, Marvell Technology is poised to play an essential role in shaping the future of AI and data-centric technologies.
