Lexington-Richland School District Staff Bonuses Paid and New Tech Director Appointed Following Cybersecurity Breach

Lexington-Richland Five Staff Bonuses Paid; New Director of Technology Appointed Following Cyberattack

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Lexington-Richland School District Five (LR5) has confirmed that staff bonuses affected by a recent cyberattack have been paid, alongside announcing the appointment of a new director of technology as the district strengthens its cybersecurity and technology leadership.

Cyberattack Disrupts Bonus Payments

The data security incident, first detected on June 4, disrupted the timely distribution of retention bonuses originally scheduled for June 6. Despite the cyberattack, LR5’s financial, academic, and technology teams worked diligently to ensure that the June 15 payroll—covering affected bonuses—was processed and completed on time.

A district spokesperson shared with WIS News 10, “The investigation into School District Five’s data security incident has revealed that some data was taken from the district network. We are still working with third-party experts to determine the scope and nature of the impacted data. If any sensitive data was impacted, the district will follow expert forensic and legal recommendations to address this issue.” The spokesperson also affirmed that, at this time, there is no reason to believe any sensitive data is being misused.

Continued Investigation and Precautions

The district continues to collaborate with external cybersecurity professionals to fully understand the breach’s extent and to ensure all necessary protective measures are implemented. Updates on the investigation will be provided to the school board as more information becomes available.

Superintendent Akil E. Ross previously emphasized that the district’s teams operated securely throughout the incident, prioritizing uninterrupted payroll services for staff.

New Director of Technology Named

In response to the incident and as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the district’s technological infrastructure, LR5 announced Kendrick Davis as the new director of technology. Davis, who has been with the district as a Technology Infrastructure Specialist, will succeed Jenny Garris, who has moved to a new position outside the district.

With over 20 years of experience, including service as an information systems resource specialist and information resource technician within LR5, Davis brings a wealth of knowledge. He is also a veteran of the United States Army.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Davis stated, “I am deeply honored and grateful to have been selected to lead the Technology Department for Lexington-Richland School District Five. I am truly excited about this new role and the opportunity to continue driving innovation and advancement in education through the effective use of technology. Being entrusted with this position means a great deal to me, and I am committed to doing my very best to serve our district with excellence.”

Moving Forward

As LR5 addresses the consequences of the cyberattack, the district remains committed to transparency, security, and ensuring that all staff are supported. The district encourages the community to stay informed via official updates.
