Indra Unveils 17 Disruptive Projects at the NGWS Technology Marketplace: A Leap into the Future of Aerial Combat Systems

Indra Leads Presentation of 17 Disruptive Projects at ‘Indra NGWS Technology Marketplace’

July 1, 2025 — In a significant gathering of innovation within Spain’s civil sector, Indra has spearheaded the presentation of 17 disruptive technological projects at the ‘Indra NGWS Technology Marketplace’. This event forms part of the ambitious NGWS/FCAS program (New Generation Weapon System/Future Combat Air System), which aims to develop the next-generation aerial combat system targeted for deployment by 2040. ### Collaboration Across Industry and Academia

The marketplace brought together fourteen companies, universities, and research centers from across Spain, showcasing a diverse array of cutting-edge projects. Participants include renowned institutions and organizations such as the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), Gradiant, Fyla, AG Photonics, the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, IDBotic, and Quside.

Several projects focused on advancing sensor technology, with active involvement from:

  • Sensia and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid
  • Anteral and Universidad Pública de Navarra
  • Universidad Carlos III de Madrid together with the Grupo de Optoelectrónica y Tecnología Láser (GOTL)
  • Beamagine and Gradiant

Leveraging Next-Generation Technologies

Key technological themes emerging from the projects include the use of edge computing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, photonics, quantum technologies, advanced cybersecurity measures, the Internet of Things (IoT), and sophisticated communication systems. These innovations are set to transform the future landscape of defense technologies.

Indra, as the national coordinator of the NGWS/FCAS program, has been instrumental in enabling the participation of these diverse entities. The company emphasizes that the program is among the most ambitious European defense initiatives, driving forward the maturation of disruptive technologies to maintain technological superiority by 2040. ### The NGWS/FCAS Program: A Tri-Nation Initiative

The NGWS/FCAS is a strategic collaboration led by Germany, Spain, and France, focused on developing an integrated “system of systems.” This includes a sixth-generation fighter jet supported by a fleet of drones—or “carriers”—operating within a networked combat cloud. The program strives to integrate advanced capabilities ensuring operational dominance for the upcoming decades.

Notably, the initiative encourages the involvement of companies outside the traditional defense industry, especially those developing dual-use technologies that have significant potential in future defense applications.

Looking Ahead

The ‘Indra NGWS Technology Marketplace’ highlights Spain’s commitment to technological innovation in defense, underpinned by cross-sector collaboration. Through projects that harness forefront digital and physical technologies, the NGWS/FCAS program positions itself at the cutting edge of European defense advancements, with Indra playing a pivotal coordinating role.
