In a significant move to bolster healthcare collaboration, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, held a high-level meeting with Alexander Pellicer, the Cuban Ambassador to Cairo, on Monday. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing and vaccine technology, reflecting longstanding historical and cultural connections between the two nations.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, underscoring the importance Cairo places on advancing its healthcare capabilities through international partnerships. Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the strong cultural and human ties with Cuba, framing them as a solid foundation to develop strategic collaborations that will support mutual development goals.
Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar outlined that the talks concentrated on fostering joint ventures in pharmaceutical production, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting technology transfer. These priorities are closely aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030, which aims to achieve sustainable development by enhancing domestic healthcare infrastructure.
Among the key areas explored during the meeting was cooperation on treatments for chronic illnesses, including diabetic foot complications and kidney disease—conditions that pose significant health burdens across Egypt. Strengthening domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing for such critical treatments is a core element of Egypt’s strategy to improve healthcare quality and accessibility.
The discussion also reviewed ongoing initiatives between Cuba and Egypt’s Holding Company for Biological Products and Vaccines (VACSERA). These projects include transferring vaccine production technologies for meningitis and pentavalent vaccines, as well as broader collaboration in biotechnology research and development.
Ambassador Pellicer expressed Cuba’s commitment to deepening ties with Egypt across health sectors, scientific research, and pharmaceuticals. He lauded Egypt’s recent healthcare reforms and acknowledged the country’s proactive efforts in forging international partnerships to advance its medical and scientific capabilities.
This enhanced collaboration signals a promising step forward for both nations as they seek to leverage their expertise and resources to better serve public health needs and contribute to sustainable medical advancements.
