Experience the Final Days of Pompeii: A Journey Through Time with Immersive Technology

Roman City of Pompeii Rediscovered Through Immersive Technology

An innovative exhibition is set to bring the ancient Roman city of Pompeii back to life like never before, combining cutting-edge immersive technology with historical artifacts to offer visitors a vivid journey into the city’s tragic final days.

Opening on 14 November at London’s Excel Waterfront, “The Last Days of Pompeii” exhibition covers an expansive 3,000 square metres and is designed to immerse guests in the experience of Pompeii’s destruction following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The exhibition features over ten distinct galleries, showcasing genuine relics alongside advanced visual and interactive displays.

One of the highlights includes 360-degree virtual reality scenes that allow visitors to witness reconstructions of Pompeii’s streets, buildings, and daily life moments before the volcanic disaster. A particularly ambitious installation is the metaverse hall, where the famed Villa of the Mysteries is recreated with remarkable detail, inviting visitors to virtually explore the ancient frescoes and mythological imagery that adorn the villa’s walls.

In addition to virtual reality, the exhibition employs large-scale projections and historical reconstructions to enhance the sensory experience, creating a dynamic environment that brings Pompeii’s past vividly into the present. These technologies enable an engaging narrative flow, guiding visitors through the catastrophic event that preserved Pompeii in volcanic ash but also froze a Roman city in time for posterity.

Since opening earlier exhibitions of this kind have already drawn an impressive crowd, with more than 750,000 visitors having experienced similar immersive displays elsewhere. This new London installation continues the trend of using digital innovation to deepen public engagement with history and archaeology.

“The Last Days of Pompeii” promises to be a must-see for history enthusiasts, scholars, and anyone intrigued by how ancient worlds can be rediscovered and re-explored using modern technology. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to step back nearly two millennia and witness the drama and humanity of one of history’s most famous natural disasters through a cutting-edge lens.

For those interested in exploring the mysteries and marvels of Pompeii in an immersive setting, the exhibition will be open to the public starting mid-November at the Excel Waterfront, London.
