Empowering Women and Reviving Millets: Aboh Unveils Innovative Processing Unit in Tirap District

Aboh Inaugurates Millet Processing Unit and Women’s Technology Park in Tirap District

Dadam, Arunachal Pradesh – July 11, 2025 — Khonsa West MLA Chakat Aboh recently inaugurated a combined women’s technology park and millet processing unit in Dadam, Tirap district. The event was held in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Techu Aran and marked a significant step towards empowering rural women and promoting sustainable agriculture in the region.

The inauguration was organized by the Kimin-based DBT-APSCS&T Centre of Excellence for Bioresources and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Khonsa-based non-governmental organization, Kindle Foundation. This initiative, titled “Capacity Building of Rural Women on Processing and Value Addition of Millets/Underutilized Crops,” is funded by the Department of Science & Technology’s SEED Division, Government of India.

During the event, DC Techu Aran emphasized the importance of self-help groups (SHGs) in managing the new machinery. He urged the SHG members to treat the equipment as their own asset and to make full use of the training provided to maximize the benefits. Additionally, he encouraged a shift in millet cultivation—from purely household consumption to commercial farming—to boost local income through agriculture.

Highlighting millet as a “multi-beneficial superfood,” MLA Chakat Aboh noted that its traditional cultivation had declined with the growing preference for rice in the region. She called for increased large-scale millet farming and proposed setting up a dedicated millet shop in Khonsa to promote the crop’s marketability and availability. Aboh also praised the Department of Science & Technology and the organizing team for establishing a facility that would significantly uplift the Dadam community.

The inauguration program witnessed the presence of other dignitaries including Dadam Circle Officer Dr. Metung Taku, Khonsa Additional Deputy Commissioner Nowang Wangnow, the chief of Dadam, local public representatives, and 23 members from various self-help groups.

This initiative represents a progressive effort to empower rural women by enhancing their skills in millet processing and value addition, thus fostering sustainable development and economic growth in Arunachal Pradesh’s rural sectors.
