MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. underscored the vital role of space science and technology in addressing pressing challenges such as climate resilience, disaster response, and sustainable development during the 31st Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-31) held at Shangri-La Mactan in Cebu.

“Space must serve the people,” President Marcos declared in his remarks at the event, highlighting the growing importance of space-driven technologies in transforming the lives of communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The APRSAF-31 conference, which took place from November 18 to 21, convened leading experts, policymakers, and stakeholders in space science and technology from more than 40 countries. The forum provided a platform for discussions on collaborative space initiatives aimed at harnessing space capabilities for societal benefits.

This year’s forum was themed “Empowering the Region through Space Ecosystem in Action,” with sessions focusing on advancing regional capabilities, exploring new frontiers in space, and fostering the growth of the space industry. President Marcos emphasized that such gatherings translate shared commitment into meaningful action by expanding space science and ensuring responsible stewardship of outer space.

Amid intensifying climate crises, increasing complexity of natural disasters, and escalating development disparities, the President pointed out that nations in the Asia-Pacific region are increasingly turning to space science to improve governance, protect the environment, and promote inclusive growth.

“APRSAF has been an essential platform since its establishment in 1993, serving as the largest regional conference on space-related matters,” President Marcos noted. “It allows us to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and pursue joint space activities that ultimately benefit our communities.”

The forum’s discussions are particularly timely as the Philippines seeks to leverage advancements in space technology to bolster its disaster management capabilities and environmental monitoring efforts, crucial for a country frequently affected by typhoons and other natural calamities.

As space science continues to evolve, President Marcos reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of these advancements are directed toward improving the lives of the Filipino people and supporting sustainable development goals.
