Dana Yao, who splits her time between Japan and the US, notes how technology enhances convenience with ease—from train cards usable on buses and vending machines to AI-powered sensors enabling cashless self-checkouts in convenience stores. “They’re high-tech, but still so human and actually helpful,” Yao says.
Tourists can experience Tokyo’s tech-forward hospitality at the Henn Na Hotel, where check-in is fully automated, robotic staff assist guests, and “smart beds” adjust room temperatures for optimal sleep. Another must-see is the driverless Yurikamome Line train in Tokyo Bay, offering stunning views of the city and Rainbow Bridge remotely controlled by AI.

Ritesh Patel, a recent San Francisco resident and startup founder, describes a vibrant ecosystem where invaluable networking opportunities emerge spontaneously. “You could be at a dinner discussing challenges and suddenly someone connects you to a key person who could help. It’s wild!” Patel remarks.
For visitors, the appeal lies in experiencing cutting-edge technology before it hits mainstream markets. Ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft debuted here before global expansion, and now autonomous vehicles by Waymo are a common sight, accessible by downloading the app.
4. Beijing: A Harmony of High-Tech and Heritage
Beijing leads globally in scientific research output, contributing 4% of all published papers worldwide. Yet, the city’s strength lies in balancing high-tech infrastructure with rich cultural traditions.
AI futurist Elle Farrell-Kingsley, a Beijing resident, describes its innovation as smoothly integrated into daily life via super apps like Alipay and WeChat. These platforms combine translation, QR code payments, and food delivery in one, streamlining everyday tasks. AI tools such as Deepseek and DouBao further ease communication for English speakers navigating the city.
“The services here run so well, it becomes almost forgettable until you leave and realize how much smoother life is,” Farrell-Kingsley notes.
