Celebrating Innovation: Highlights from the 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards

TV Academy Announces 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Winners

The Television Academy has revealed the distinguished recipients of the 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards, honoring groundbreaking achievements in broadcast technology that continue to shape and revolutionize television production and storytelling. The awards will be presented on Tuesday, October 14, at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center.

“Behind every unforgettable moment on screen is a breakthrough in science, technology or engineering,” said TV Academy Chair Cris Abrego. “These groundbreaking innovations transform the way stories are created, shared and experienced. We celebrate these Emmy winners for forever changing how we experience the magnificent power of television.”

Lifetime and Corporate Achievement Honors

This year’s prestigious Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Mark Schubin, a chemical engineer by training who has had a multifaceted career in television since 1967. Schubin’s work spans design, manufacturing, lighting, sound, camera, editing, and distribution across global projects, including the innovative broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera performances to cinemas and television stations worldwide. He has contributed to the industry not only through his technical work but also as an educator and thought leader, chairing the HPA Tech Retreat since 1998 and participating actively in the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Engineering Awards committee for over three decades.

The Philo T. Farnsworth Corporate Achievement Award will be bestowed upon BBC Research & Development, honoring its extensive history of technological contributions since 1930. BBC R&D has been pivotal in key advancements such as FM radio, stereo sound, the Radio Data System, and the development and standardization of High-Definition Television (HDTV), Ultra High-Definition Television (UHDTV), Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) for High Dynamic Range (HDR) content, and 5G networks. The organization is also at the forefront of research into emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), including its role as co-founder of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which aims to establish standards around human/AI collaboration and copyright in media.

Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards Recipients

The Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards recognize individuals, companies, or organizations whose developments either represent significant improvements on existing methods or innovative breakthroughs that materially impact television production, recording, transmission, or reception.

  • George Dochev and Peter Thompson are honored for developing LucidLink, a cloud-native storage collaboration platform. LucidLink enables creative teams to access and edit files instantly from anywhere without needing to sync, download, use VPNs, or rely on complex IT infrastructures.

  • Ian Sampson is recognized for Hush Pro, an AI-powered audio plugin that isolates dialogue from ambient noise, transient sounds, and room reflections, allowing editors and re-recording mixers to efficiently clean up production audio with minimal artifacts and exceptional quality.

  • Fraunhofer IIS and intoPIX received accolades for JPEG XS, an advanced image compression format. JPEG XS delivers high-quality images with minimal latency and low resource consumption, offering virtually lossless quality ideal for live, professional video and broadcast applications where bandwidth is a constraint.

  • The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and Video Services Forum (VSF) are acknowledged for the ST 2110 Suite of Standards, a set of protocols for transmitting uncompressed video, audio, and data over IP networks in professional media environments, replacing traditional SDI infrastructure with more flexible and scalable solutions.

  • Mark T. Noel, Jesse Noel, Casey D. Noel, and J.D. Schwalm developed the NACMO series of motion bases, pioneering mobile motion bases designed for television and cinema. These provide six (or seven with an optional rotator) axes of motion to static props or sets—such as boats, helicopters, or cars—offering a streamlined and safe solution for dynamic production needs.

  • Jayson Dumenigo created Action Factory’s Play’n with Fire Hydrogels, high-performance polymers that protect performers in fire stunts. These gels function at 74-76 degrees Fahrenheit without icing, maintain exceptional stability, and reduce reapplication frequency even under intense heat, significantly enhancing safety and efficiency on set.

  • Rob Drewett and Andy Nancollis are recognized for the AGITO Dolly System, a modular robotic dolly platform celebrated for its versatility, compactness, and ability to seamlessly combine the functions of multiple traditional camera rigs into one reconfigurable system, enabling steady and dynamic camera movements.

  • Andy Carluccio, Jonathan Kokotajlo, Eyal Hadida, and Brendan Ittelson developed Zoom for Broadcast, transforming Zoom Meetings into broadcast-ready media feeds by extracting individual high-quality video and audio streams. This innovation supports remote broadcasting workflows, enhancing production flexibility.

Industry Tributes

Barry Zegel, co-chair of the Engineering, Science & Technology committee, commented on this year’s winners: “The award recipients represent a remarkable group of cutting-edge technologies that have advanced television production, safety, and artistry in ways unfathomable when our industry began.”

Co-chair Wendy Aylsworth praised this year’s honorees, particularly the legacy awards recipients: “Both Mark Schubin and BBC Research & Development are incredibly deserving of these prestigious legacy awards.”

The 2025 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards spotlight the ongoing evolution of television technology and its critical role in enabling storytelling and viewer engagement in an ever-changing media landscape.
