Apple Explores AI Technologies to Revolutionize Chip Design
San Francisco, CA – June 19, 2025
Apple Inc. seeks to use generative AI to simplify the work on its custom chips. This change may improve efficiency and spark new ideas for its tech products. Johny Srouji, the senior vice president of hardware technologies, told his audience in Belgium. He spoke as he received an award from Imec, an independent researcher in semiconductors.
In his talk, Srouji gave a brief history of Apple’s chip design work. He began with the A4 chip used in the iPhone in 2010. He noted that Apple’s chip designs now serve many devices. They power both Mac computers and the new Vision Pro headset.
The Role of Advanced Tools in Chip Design
Srouji said that a key lesson in their work is to use new tools. Apple plans to use modern electronic design automation software. The software comes from top firms like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys. Both firms now put AI into their systems. Srouji said, “EDA companies are very important in solving our chip design challenges.” He believes that AI methods can speed up design work so that more tasks finish in less time.
Big Bets and No Turning Back
Srouji also recalled when Apple changed its Mac chips in 2020 from Intel’s to its own. He called that move a big bet with no backup plan. There was no fall-back, and the company went all in. He mentioned the large software effort that joined the change.
Apple keeps investing in chip work as it stays ahead in a fast tech field. By using AI in chip design, the firm aims to make its chips run faster and cut down waiting time for new products. The goal is to give users a better device experience.
Conclusion
Apple studies new tech methods in chip design as the tech field shifts. The use of AI in chip work may set new rules for speed and quality in chip making. This shift can open the door to improved hardware and software in the future.
