Empowering the Next Generation: Meet the New Board Members of Afrobarometer Driving Change in Governance and Technology

Four New Board Members Strengthen Afrobarometer’s Commitment to Youth Empowerment, Technology, Governance, and Finance

Afrobarometer, the pan-African research organization known for its rigorous and citizen-centered data on governance, democracy, and development, has recently announced the appointment of four new board members. This strategic expansion of the board aims to enhance Afrobarometer’s expertise and deepen its impact in critical areas including youth leadership, technology innovation, governance, and finance.

New Leadership to Advance Afrobarometer’s Mission

The newly appointed board members bring diverse and complementary skills drawn from across Africa and beyond, reinforcing Afrobarometer’s position as a trusted voice in Africa’s socio-economic and political landscape. The organization has long been recognized for its high-quality surveys that reflect the views of more than three-quarters of Africa’s population, collected through over 430,000 interviews in 45 countries.

Meet the New Board Members

  • Bupe Lughano Kabaghe
    A distinguished governance and development specialist, Bupe Kabaghe has extensive experience in policy research and youth empowerment initiatives. With a global career spanning Africa, the UK, and the US, she holds a master’s degree in global governance and diplomacy from the University of Oxford. She is also the founder of the Abana Afrika Foundation, which has empowered over 450 young Africans through leadership and advocacy programs, emphasizing inclusion and sustainable development.

  • Mathias Hounkpe
    From Benin, Hounkpe is an expert in elections and governance with over two decades of experience promoting democratic processes throughout West Africa. Currently Gabon’s country representative for the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), he has also led IFES programmes in Mali and Chad. An academic lecturer and co-author of studies on electoral management bodies, he brings a deep understanding of democratic consolidation.

  • Rita Sraha
    A chartered accountant and business consultant from Ghana, Rita Sraha has almost 30 years of experience in finance, corporate governance, and strategic management. She currently serves as acting managing director and a board member of Ghana Post Company Ltd. Her extensive career includes senior leadership positions at Kwame Asante & Associates, with work spanning private and public sectors domestically and internationally.

  • Sherif Helal
    An Egyptian electrical engineer focused on the intersection of technology and social impact, Sherif Helal incorporates artificial intelligence into social and economic development initiatives. He is developing the Social Knowledge Engine, an AI-powered concept designed to foster accountability, data sharing, and inclusive growth, reflecting a strong commitment to innovation that benefits the public good.

Strengthening Focus on Youth, Governance, and Technology

Afrobarometer Board Chair Amina Oyagbola highlighted the significance of these appointments: “Africa’s future will be shaped by a new generation of leaders and how effectively we harness technology for the public good. Our new members bring strong credentials in youth leadership, governance, and digital innovation, reinforcing Afrobarometer’s capacity to generate citizen-centred data that speaks to the aspirations of young Africans and supports evidence-based decision making across the continent.”

Afrobarometer’s work informs influential global indices such as the Ibrahim Index of African Governance and Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer. Its data supports country risk analyses and guides credit rating agencies, forming a critical resource for governments, civil society, and development partners.
