Tragic Loss: Beloved Alabama Sports Icon Christina Chambers Passes Away at Home in Hoover

HOOVER, Ala. — The Alabama sports community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Christina Chambers, a cherished sports broadcaster and educator, who was found dead at her home in Hoover on Tuesday morning. Authorities are investigating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide, which also claimed the life of her husband. A young child present at the scene was unharmed.

Christina Chambers was widely respected for her insightful sports reporting and genuine passion for athletics. Her career in broadcast journalism spanned numerous prominent Alabama media outlets. From 2015 to 2021, she was a familiar face at WBRC, where her coverage of sports was marked by depth and empathy. Prior to WBRC, Chambers worked at WLTZ in Columbus, Georgia, focusing on general news and Auburn sports, and also contributed to Charter Sports Southeast and WAKA in Montgomery.

Beyond her on-air presence, Chambers was devoted to nurturing the next generation of journalists. She taught broadcast journalism at Thompson High School and was a regular contributor to Alabama Public Television’s coverage of the Alabama High School Athletic Association football championships in recent years. In 2024, she earned the prestigious Advisor of the Year award from the Alabama Scholastic Press Association, a testament to her commitment as an educator.

Christina’s colleagues remember her not only for her professional excellence but also for her warm personality and kindness. Jack Williams, External Affairs Director of Alabama Public Television, reflected on Chambers’ unique understanding of sports: “She recognized the sacrifices athletes make and approached her work with sincere passion and joy. Her smile and engaging spirit were ever-present, whether on the sidelines or in the press room.”

Originally from Cullman, Alabama, Chambers graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2009 with a degree in mass communication. After stepping away from full-time broadcasting, she joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, where she was beloved by coworkers for her warmth and inspiration.

As a devoted mother, Christina’s friends and colleagues recall her deep love for her young child. Williams shared, “My last conversation with her was just two weeks ago at Protective Stadium, where she spoke lovingly about her child and her joy in being a mother. This loss is truly devastating.”

The Hoover Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Meanwhile, the community is left grappling with the sudden loss of a woman who touched countless lives through her work and her kindness.

Funeral services are being planned, with those who knew Christina Chambers coming together to honor her legacy and support her family during this incredibly difficult time. Her impact on Alabama sports broadcasting and journalism education will not be forgotten.
