Airbnb Deploys Anti-Party Technology to Screen New Year’s Eve Bookings in Los Angeles
As New Year’s Eve 2025 approaches, Airbnb is ramping up its efforts to prevent disruptive parties and neighborhood disturbances in Los Angeles and across the United States. The company has announced that it is reactivating its anti-party technology nationwide, including in key markets such as Los Angeles, in a move aimed at promoting responsible stays and reducing community disruptions during one of the busiest rental periods of the year.
This renewed initiative coincides with the five-year anniversary of Airbnb’s global ban on disruptive parties, which was first introduced in 2020 amid growing concerns over noise complaints, property damage, and safety issues related to large unauthorized gatherings.
How the Anti-Party Technology Works
Airbnb’s machine-learning technology analyzes hundreds of indicators to identify bookings that may pose a higher risk of hosting disruptive parties, especially around high-risk dates like New Year’s Eve. When a reservation is flagged by the system, Airbnb may either block the booking outright or offer alternative accommodations such as private rooms or hotel stays instead of entire home rentals.
According to the company, during last year’s New Year’s Eve period in Los Angeles alone, approximately 300 individuals were prevented from booking entire home listings because of being flagged by this screening system. Statewide, around 2,500 potential renters in California were blocked from renting entire homes during the holiday season, while more than 20,000 across the U.S. were similarly prevented.
Since implementing the party ban and screening technology, Airbnb reports a 64% decrease in party reports in California. The company also states that over 99.9% of Airbnb reservations in California last year had no reported party-related disturbances.
Reminder of Policies and Support for Law Enforcement
Airbnb is urging all users to remember several key rules ahead of the holiday:
- Bookings linked to parties, including those promoted through social media, may be canceled.
- Third-party bookings are prohibited; adults cannot book stays on behalf of others, including minors.
- Guests must be at least 18 years old.
- The person who makes the reservation must be present during the stay.
Violations of these policies can lead to canceled trips, account suspension or removal, and financial responsibility for any property damage incurred.
The company also reaffirmed its readiness to support law enforcement investigations if necessary, emphasizing its commitment to community safety.
Ongoing Safety Measures and Resources
Beyond holiday period screenings, Airbnb offers year-round monitoring of reservations. Residents can utilize a Neighborhood Support Line to report urgent concerns related to Airbnb rentals. Additionally, both hosts and guests have access to a 24-hour safety line.
In an effort to minimize noise-related disturbances, U.S. hosts can request free noise sensors that detect elevated sound levels without recording audio, helping maintain neighborhood peace while respecting privacy.
Looking Ahead
Airbnb’s anti-party technology will remain active throughout the days surrounding New Year’s Eve, reinforcing the company’s broader initiative to foster respectful and responsible home sharing experiences that benefit both guests and communities alike.
By leveraging advanced technology and clear policies, Airbnb aims to help ensure a safer, quieter, and more enjoyable holiday season for Los Angeles neighborhoods and communities throughout the country.
