Revolutionizing Mineral Discovery: Atomionics Secures $12.7M to Propel Quantum Sensor Technology

Atomionics Secures $12.7 Million to Expand Quantum Gravimetry Technology for Mineral Exploration

September 15, 2025 – Singapore

Atomionics, a Singapore-based technology startup, has successfully raised $12.7 million in a Pre-Series A funding round aimed at scaling its advanced quantum gravimetry sensors designed for mineral discovery. The company believes its cutting-edge technology could revolutionize subsurface exploration by significantly reducing costs and accelerating project development timelines.

The funding round was led by Australia’s Paspalis and included prominent investors such as BHP Ventures, In-Q-Tel (IQT), Wavemaker, VU Venture Partners, SG Growth Capital, and entrepreneur Alex Turnbull. This diverse capital backing reflects a growing interest in quantum-driven innovations within the mining and energy sectors.

Revolutionizing Exploration with Quantum Gravimetry

Atomionics’ flagship product, Gravio, is a portable sensor roughly the size of a basketball. It operates by acting as a “virtual X-ray” for the Earth’s subsurface, capable of detecting mineral deposits without the need for traditional invasive techniques. Unlike conventional methods that can be slow and costly, Gravio uses quantum gravimetry combined with artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver high-resolution subsurface maps up to ten times faster.

The technology leverages ultra-sensitive quantum sensors by cooling atoms to near absolute zero temperatures. At these extremely low temperatures, atoms behave like waves rather than particles, enabling precise measurements of gravitational fields beneath the surface. These measurements help identify the presence and distribution of minerals such as copper, lithium, and other critical resources.

Strategic Partnerships and Global Expansion

In February 2025, Atomionics entered into a collaboration with Rio Tinto Exploration to trial its quantum gravity sensor for mineral exploration, underscoring industry interest in this groundbreaking technology.

“With this funding, we are taking a critical step toward scaling quantum-driven exploration capabilities at a national level,” stated Sahil Tapiawala, CEO of Atomionics. “Backing from investors across Australia and North America allows us to accelerate deployment of our sensors and support sustainable discovery of essential minerals for the mining and energy industries.”

The company plans to expand operations in Australia by establishing a nationwide presence supported by strategic partner Paspalis. Initial deployments and testing are already underway in the Northern Territory. In North America, a new U.S. office will be set up to broaden capabilities, targeting both commercial mineral exploration and potential dual-use applications in defense and national security sectors, facilitated by support from IQT.

Industry Impact and Endorsements

Laurel Buckner, Vice President of Ventures at BHP, highlighted the significance of the technology: “Atomionics’ portable, high-resolution gravimetric sensor can unlock faster, more accurate exploration of large subsurface areas. Our investment aligns with BHP’s commitment to securing metals and minerals vital to the global economy and advancing sustainable practices.”

As the global demand for critical minerals intensifies, particularly for emerging energy technologies and infrastructure, innovations like Atomionics’ quantum sensors could play a transformative role in resource discovery and extraction.
