Canfield Fair Embraces New Technologies for Its 179th Year to Enhance Visitor Experience
CANFIELD, Ohio — As the 179th annual Canfield Fair prepares to open its gates this Wednesday, organizers are excited to introduce a series of technological upgrades aimed at improving operations and enhancing the experience for vendors and fairgoers alike.
Fair Director George Roman highlighted that this year marks a significant shift with the adoption of an all-online registration system. For the first time, all participants—including vendors and those exhibiting plants, crafts, artwork, and animals—registered exclusively through digital platforms. Despite some initial hesitation, the fair office provided in-person assistance to those without computer access, ensuring a smooth transition for all.
“The move to online registration has been a huge success,” Roman said. “In past years, the fair would typically be about 90% full two weeks before opening day. This year, we’re already at 99% capacity.” While the fair deliberately leaves some space open, Roman noted that this year’s near-full attendance is higher than usual.
Fair manager Skye Tancer added that these technological enhancements are streamlining the fair’s operations, eliminating the long lines and wait times typically seen during registration and entry. “Vendors have paid and registered in advance, so everything will run more smoothly,” Tancer said.
To address potential last-minute cancellations, Roman explained that a waiting list of eager vendors stands ready to fill any vacant spots. This proactive strategy helps maintain the fair’s bustling atmosphere every day.
Enhanced Connectivity with Fiber Optics
Another key upgrade this year involves a major improvement to the fair’s internet infrastructure. The recent switch to fiber optic lines is expected to alleviate the chronic problem of overloaded cellphone signals caused by the dense crowds and heavy wireless usage during the fair.
Roman explained, “The fiber optic lines will significantly boost Wi-Fi capacity and enhance cell phone signals, allowing visitors to stay connected without interruption.” This upgrade caters not only to vendors and staff but also to attendees eager to share their fair experiences in real time.
New Entrances and Parking Features Amid Traffic Challenges
With infrastructure changes ongoing in the surrounding area, the fair has also adapted to ensure smoother traffic flow. The replacement of the U.S. 224 Turnpike bridge near the fairgrounds has necessitated patience from visitors, but organizers have opened a new southern entrance to facilitate better vehicle access.
“With the new gate, cars can enter from both the south and north through separate entrances,” Roman said. “We encourage everyone to be patient during the bridge repairs—we’re committed to getting you into the fair.”
Once inside, fairgoers will benefit from a brand-new feature within the official Canfield Fair app designed to enhance parking convenience. Visitors can use the app to “ping” their vehicles after parking, making it easier to locate their cars when it’s time to leave.
Ticketing and Future Plans for Cashless Transactions
To further reduce wait times, new ticket kiosks will be available at Gates A, C, and 5, allowing attendees to purchase admission on site without hassle.
Looking beyond this year, Roman shared a vision for a fully cashless fair in the future. Though not expected within the next couple of years, the plan would involve connecting all vendors to a centralized payment network to streamline sales and accounting processes.
“Our biggest challenge will be ensuring enough power capacity for such a system,” Roman noted. “But this is the direction we are headed toward to modernize the fair experience.”
As the Canfield Fair celebrates its 179th year, these technology-driven initiatives reflect a commitment to tradition combined with innovation. Visitors can look forward to a fair that honors its rich past while embracing the conveniences of the digital age.
The Canfield Fair runs from August 27 through September 1, 2025, featuring carnival rides, agricultural exhibits, contests, entertainment, and numerous family-friendly activities. For more information, visit the official fair website or download the Canfield Fair app.
