GRSE Partners with Reintjes GmbH to Advance Marine Propulsion Technology

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), one of India’s leading defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs), has taken a significant step forward in marine propulsion technology by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reintjes GmbH, a Germany-based leader renowned for marine gearbox design and manufacturing.
The collaboration aims to merge Reintjes’ cutting-edge marine gearbox technology with selected ship engines constructed at GRSE’s facilities. This strategic partnership is expected to enhance propulsion efficiency and overall vessel performance, benefiting both defence warships and commercial vessels. These improvements will serve not only the domestic Indian market but also international export markets, reinforcing GRSE’s commitment to technological excellence in shipbuilding.
Reintjes GmbH brings to the table over a decade of specialized engineering expertise in high-performance gear trains specifically designed for marine applications. By integrating these advanced capabilities, GRSE anticipates elevating the operational effectiveness of its marine propulsion systems.
This agreement forms part of GRSE’s broader initiative to strengthen its global collaborations and expand its marine equipment capabilities. Earlier this year, GRSE signed two noteworthy agreements in June 2025 — one with Berg Propulsion of Sweden to upgrade propulsion systems for government marine projects and another with SunStone of Denmark for potential joint ventures in the expedition cruise vessel sector. Additionally, in April 2025, GRSE inked an MoU with SWAN Defence and Heavy Industries Ltd aimed at boosting domestic commercial shipbuilding capabilities.
With around 85% of its revenue generated from shipbuilding activities, GRSE remains a cornerstone of India’s maritime defence manufacturing landscape. Its ongoing partnerships with international leaders underscore its ambitions to equip Indian naval and commercial fleets with world-class propulsion solutions, bolstering India’s strategic autonomy and export potential in maritime technologies.
