Bong Go Proposes Groundbreaking Bill to Revamp Medical Technology Profession in the Philippines

Senator Bong Go Files Bill to Modernize Medical Technology Profession in the Philippines

July 7, 2025 – Manila — Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has introduced a landmark bill aimed at updating and strengthening the regulation of the medical technology profession in the Philippines. The proposed legislation, titled the “New Philippine Medical Technology Act of 2025,” seeks to replace Republic Act No. 5527, widely known as the “Medical Technology Act of 1969,” which Go described as outdated and insufficient in addressing present-day healthcare demands and technological advancements.

Modernizing a Five-Decade-Old Law

For over 50 years, RA 5527 has governed the practice of medical technology in the country. However, rapid advancements in medical science and diagnostic technologies have rendered many provisions of the law obsolete. Senator Go highlighted this in his statement, noting, “While it has served as a foundation for the profession, many of its provisions are now outdated and no longer reflect the current advancements, standards, and realities of medical practice.”

The bill intends to bring the country’s regulatory framework up to date with international best practices and technological innovations, ensuring that medical technologists are better equipped to support the healthcare system effectively.

Recognizing the Vital Role of Medical Technologists

Senator Go emphasized the critical contribution of medical technologists, particularly during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. These professionals were at the forefront of disease detection, diagnostics, and public health surveillance, often working under perilous conditions.

“They have stood at the frontlines of disease detection, diagnostics, and public health surveillance, often at great personal risk,” the senator said. The proposed law aims to establish clearer standards in the education, licensure, and ethical responsibilities of medical technologists, fostering a highly skilled, ethical, and globally competitive workforce committed to serving the public.

Improving Compensation and Working Conditions

In addition to regulatory updates, the bill proposes setting the minimum entry-level salary for registered medical technologists in government service at Salary Grade 15. This move is intended to align their compensation with that of nurses and other allied health professionals, reflecting their indispensable role within the healthcare sector.

Part of a Broader Legislative Agenda

The “New Philippine Medical Technology Act of 2025” is among ten priority bills filed by Senator Go in the 20th Congress. His agenda also includes legislation related to disaster resilience, the implementation of health identification cards, expanded educational scholarships, and wage increases for various sectors.

Senator Go reaffirmed his dedication to health and social welfare reforms, particularly those benefiting the poor and marginalized communities. “For my second term, with all sincerity, I will continue to push for pro‑poor programs and laws, especially on health. Health is wealth. We must collaborate to bring quality medical services closer to our people, particularly the poor and indigent patients,” he said, underscoring the importance of accessible healthcare for every Filipino.
