Revolutionizing Grocery Shopping: Try Out Wegmans' New Smart Carts in DeWitt!

Wegmans in DeWitt Introduces Smart Cart Technology for Shoppers

DeWitt, NY — Wegmans is stepping into the future of grocery shopping with the launch of its new Smart Cart technology at the DeWitt store, one of four locations in New York selected for this innovative trial. Starting Friday, customers at the DeWitt Wegmans will be able to use these high-tech shopping carts that allow them to scan items as they shop, providing a more streamlined and efficient checkout process.

The new Smart Carts come equipped with a built-in device featuring a touchscreen near the handle. Shoppers simply scan the barcode on each item using sensors integrated into the cart. A beep and a green light confirm successful scanning, enabling customers to bag their groceries as they shop. Upon approaching checkout, the system allows for quick payment without the need for lengthy scanning lines.

Wegmans spokesperson Evelyn Ingraham explained that the trial is part of a broader “Smart Cart Test & Learn” program being conducted simultaneously at three other Wegmans stores across New York, in Perinton and Pittsford (Rochester area) and on Alberta Drive in Buffalo. Two different technology providers are being evaluated to determine the best fit for the company and its customers.

“We view this as an early-stage technology that could, in the future, offer an alternative way for our customers to shop in our stores,” Ingraham said. She emphasized that the pilot program is designed not only to test the technical performance but also to gather customer feedback to identify improvements and resolve any issues.

Prior to this public rollout, Wegmans employees and select customers at the DeWitt location have been testing the Smart Carts to ensure functionality and ease of use. Now, the general public is invited to experience the new shopping option firsthand.

The introduction of the Smart Cart comes two years after Wegmans discontinued its "SCAN" app, which allowed customers to scan items using their own smartphones. The previous program was ended due to significant losses attributed to the technology and shopper behavior.

As Wegmans explores new ways to enhance the grocery shopping experience, the company encourages customers at these pilot locations to provide feedback that will help shape future offerings.
